The Evolution of My New Front Border
Our front garden is mostly gravel encircling a central bed. Until last year it was flanked on the eastern side by a triangle of rather rough lawn. When we had some major building work done in 2009, this sorry patch of grass metamorphosed into a builders' yard complete with concrete mixer. Once the builders had moved on, we found that the 'lawn' had been replaced by a thick crust of cement and brick dust.
So, last spring I laboriously scraped this noxious layer off ready for re-seeding but, with a touch of genius which committed him to help out with some heavy digging, my best beloved suggested turning the whole area into a new border. Why hadn't I thought of that?
We dug in about 50 bags of compost and I was ready to go. As I began to plan, I realised that, unlike the rest of my garden, this was a spot with day-long summer sunshine. Oh, joy.
